Hello

Dr. Rodney Anderson Sr.

I am a South Central Los Angeles California native.  I am a married father of 1. My one and only son is Rodney Jr. (RJ). I am a south-central native born and raised. I attended California State University Fullerton on a basketball scholarship. I graduated from CSUF in 2005 with my bachelor’s degree in human services. I completed my Master’s degree from CSUF in 2008 in counseling. I completed my doctorate degree from the University of Southern California in 2017.

I work at CSUF as an EOP counselor. The program is aimed at working with first-generation college students. I have been in this position for over 12 years. I began working at Cal State Fullerton and the Athletics academic services department as an academic advisor. Currently, I have served as the interim Assistant Dir. for the University Learning Center at CSUF.

Outside of work, my focus is to work with men of color, primarily black boys to help guide them through this thing we call life. I believe in mentorship as a key role in my life, and I credit mentoring for the success I’ve been able to accomplish.

I am also passionate about basketball. I played since the age of five or six. It has been the one consistent thing in my life. Truly it is one of my first loves. Family is the most important thing to me. If I’m not watching basketball I’m usually spending time with my family.

My interest working with men of color extends back to before I even began college. College was not really spoken upon in my neighborhood. To me when I began to think about college I knew I also wanted to pursue education to provide opportunity and become an example for young men who grew up in environments like my own. Life challenges that occurred in my freshman year of college worked to alter those plans slightly but it didn’t change my plans of course. For me, one of the more important things that has helped  me continue my momentum is being an example and statistic for the good that can grow in those environments.
